Assistive Listening Devices

An assistive listening device, or ALD, is a portable instrument that works as a personal amplifier. Unlike hearing aids, which amplify sounds, an ALD relies on a microphone placed near the sound source to separate speech from background noise, enabling those with hearing loss to understand more efficiently in certain situations.

ALDs can be used by themselves, or in conjunction with hearing aids or cochlear implants, where it serves to enhance the effectiveness of those devices, which – as well as they perform – aren’t as effective at separating speech from background noises, tending to amplify both. In contrast, ALDs boost the sounds you are trying to hear by turning the volume up on the speaker only.

ALDs provide the following benefits. They allow a user to:

  • Hear a speaker from a distance. Because sound fades with distance, the farther away the speaker, the more difficult to understand what is being said.
  • Separate speech from background noise. Competing noise is a distraction. Noisy crowds, ventilation systems, shuffling papers, vending machines, TVs, and outdoor traffic can all hamper your ability to hear clearly.
  • Overcome poor acoustical environments and other situations that make hearing a challenge. Sound waves bounce off hard surfaces, causing reverberation and distortion. Large, open spaces or sparsely furnished rooms make for poor listening environments.

ALDs work by broadcasting signals to a handheld FM receiver, which the user can tune into and listen at a comfortable volume level. They give the user control over differentiating important sounds from distracting background noise. The devices include a microphone for capturing sound, a transmitter for sending the signal over an FM frequency, and a receiver for broadcasting the signal. The majority of ALDs utilize wireless technology, allowing the user to connect with a variety of Bluetooth compatible devices including phones, tablets, computers, and televisions.
